Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that starting therapy can bring up many questions. Below, you'll find answers to some of the most common concerns — from how sessions work to what to expect before your first appointment. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out — we’re here to help.
1What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, is a process where a trained therapist helps individuals, couples, or families explore emotional and psychological issues in a safe, confidential environment. It can help with managing stress, improving relationships, and dealing with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, trauma, or grief.
2Who benefits from counseling?
If we consider the entire population as 100%, over 90% of people are healthy but face daily challenges and issues that affect their sense of satisfaction and happiness. These individuals may be dealing with marital, family, or relationship issues, parenting challenges, adapting to new circumstances, or a variety of other concerns that require specialized counseling and psychotherapy services. Therefore, counseling services address the needs of almost 90% of the population and serve as a preventive measure to stop problems from becoming more complex or leading to serious mental health issues.
3Is psychotherapy confidential?
Yes, psychotherapy is confidential, meaning that what you discuss with your therapist will not be shared with others without your permission, except in specific situations (e.g., if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others specially kids). This confidentiality helps build trust between you and your therapist.
4Are those who visit a counselor considered mentally ill?
Clients seeking counseling are healthy individuals who are dealing with everyday life challenges. They are not considered to be mentally ill.
5Are counseling services covered by OHIP or any other insurances ?
Counseling and psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP. However, many private insurance plans do offer coverage for these services. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm whether your plan covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist, Social Worker, or Psychologist. Note: Please be advised that payment for the session is required prior to receiving the official receipt. You can then use this receipt to submit your claim to your insurance provider.
6How much does counseling cost?
The cost of each counseling session depends on the client’s situation and the session’s duration. Since clients often require multiple sessions, efforts are made to keep costs manageable so that clients can fully benefit from the services.
7What is the role of the counselor in the process of solving problems?
Counseling is a process that helps individuals find their path to personal growth and empowers them to solve their own problems. The counselor helps clients understand the root causes of their challenges, discover their strengths, and learn how to face and overcome their difficulties. The counselor also supports clients in making better decisions to prevent problems from escalating.
8How can I book a counseling appointment?
You can request an appointment by phone or email, and we will do our best to schedule you at the earliest available time.
9Can I request an official receipt for tax purposes?
Since the license to provide counseling and psychotherapy services is issued by the Canadian Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy, which is a legal body with an official registration number, clients can request an official receipt for tax purposes.
10If I need to change or cancel my appointment, how much notice do I need to give?
Any changes or cancellations must be communicated at least 24 hours in advance. If a client does not confirm their appointment after receiving a reminder by text or email, the appointment will be automatically canceled and offered to another client.
11Do you only offer online sessions?
While we currently have more availability for online sessions, we are happy to accommodate in-person meetings if that works better for you.
12How do I prepare for a therapy session?
Preparing for therapy can be as simple as reflecting on your current feelings, challenges, or any specific issues you want to address. It can be helpful to write down thoughts or questions you’d like to discuss. Being open and honest with your therapist will help you get the most out of your sessions.
13What is the process from making an appointment to attending the session?
The process begins with calling or sending an email to request an appointment. Once scheduled, you will receive an invoice and an invitation, which will include intake and consent forms. You will need to make your payment and complete all required forms before attending the session. Attention! The process begins with calling or sending an email to request an appointment. This helps prevent delays and overcrowding in the waiting area. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
14Can I ask questions or discuss the content of the sessions outside of the scheduled sessions, either by phone or informally?
According to professional standards and the regulations of the College of Registered Psychotherapists, any communication about the content of the sessions or any questions should be addressed during the official counseling sessions. Therefore, please ensure to raise any questions or concerns during your scheduled therapy session.
15Will therapy work for me?
Therapy can be very effective, but it requires commitment and active participation from both you and the therapist. Success in therapy often depends on the therapeutic relationship, the goals you set, and your willingness to work through difficult emotions and behaviors. It’s normal to experience some discomfort during the process, but many people find that the benefits outweigh the challenges.
16How long does therapy take?
The duration of therapy depends on the individual’s goals, the issues they are facing, and the type of therapy being used. Some people may see improvement in just a few sessions, while others may require long-term therapy. Typically, therapy sessions last 50 minutes, and the frequency can vary from once a week to less frequently, depending on your needs.
